The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a contract to energy efficient solutions provider Energy Focus to develop lighting technologies for US Navy ships.

Under the contract, the company will produce solid state lighting fixtures for naval vessels replacing the current use of incandescent and fluorescent light systems.

The company’s chief technology officer said the longer-life LED lighting systems will save a significant amount of energy and maintenance and will have a projected lifetime of over 50,000 hours.

DARPA has awarded the $500,000 extension contract as part of a plan to develop a lighting alternative for naval ships.
