The US Navy has awarded a $42.1m contract to Electric Boat Corporation to execute periodical maintenance on the Los Angeles Class submarine USS Springfield.

Under the contract, the company will carry out advance planning, design documentation, engineering, procurement and ship checks.

Additionally, the company will carry out fabrication and preliminary shipyard work, necessary alterations, repairs, maintenance, modernisation, testing and routine work required to make the submarine mission-ready for the fleet.

Work will be carried out in Groton, Connecticut. It is expected to be complete by February 2010.

The contract has been awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington Navy Yard, DC.
