The US Navy has announced that the attack submarines USS Los Angeles and USS Philadelphia, along with three other surface ships, will be taken out of active service by 2010.

The USS Los Angeles will be retired on 2 November 2009 followed by the USS Philadelphia on 10 June 2010.
The three other navy ships that are going to retire include Oliver Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigate USS McInerney on 31 August 2010, combat stores ship USS San Jose on 27 January 2010 and the ammunition ship Mount Baker on 2 August 2010.
The navy is considering using the San Jose and Mount Baker in fleet training exercises, possibly as targets.
