The South Korean Navy is to receive a medium-sized Aegis-class warship built through the combined effort of South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries and US company Lockheed Martin.

The warship will be built using a combination of Hyundai’s shipbuilding technology and Lockheed’s Aegis combat system.

The memorandum of understanding for the construction of the 4,000t to 6,000t warship was signed in 2008 after the firm’s successful joint development of the KDX-III Aegis destroyer for the South Korean Navy.

The combat system on the ship includes the SPY-1 radar system that can deliver missiles in naval warfare in conjunction with MK 41 Vertical Launching System.

The navy plans to export the ships with SPY-1F radar to India introducing high-tech Aegis ships designed to track incoming missiles and shoot them down.
