The Iranian Navy has foiled an attempt by Somali pirates to hijack one of the country’s oil tankers, the Hadi, in the Gulf of Aden.

The oil tanker was escorted by an Iranian Navy ship which was then joined by a US destroyer and a Saudi Arabian frigate.

During early 2009, six warships were sent by the Iranian Navy to international waters including the Gulf of Aden to fight pirate attacks and protect oil tankers.
