The Portuguese Navy has christened NRP Arpão to its Latter Class 209PN submarine at the German shipbuilding company Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft in Kiel.
The new submersible warship is incorporated with combined diesel-electric and fuel cell propulsion system as well as ultra-modern sensors and an integrated command and weapon control system.
The submarine is 68m in length and 13m in height with a displacement capacity close to 1,850t and a crew quantity of 32.
The name of the first submarine is NRP Tridente. It started sea trials in March 2009.
