Lockheed Martin has successfully completed a system design review for modernising the combat systems on the Canadian Navy’s 12 Halifax Class multi-mission frigates.

The combat systems integration is a C$1.5bn programme aimed at providing a new command and control system, radars and other warfare capabilities to the Halifax Class frigates, commissioned between 1992 and 1997.

The government-mandated review process covered Lockheed Martin’s plans for shipboard systems, trainers and facilities in detail.

The successful completion of the process allows the company to go ahead with selecting final key components to be used for new combat systems in ships.

The contract awarded in late 2008 allows Lockheed Martin in Canada to preserve the current command and control systems till entire fleet gets upgraded.
