The Russian Navy’s Black Sea Fleet will receive six Kilo Class diesel-electric submarines in the next few years, navy commander Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky has said.

Vysotsky earlier confirmed that the fleet, based in Sevastopol, would receive a total of 15 new frigates and diesel-electric submarines by 2020.

Currently, Russia’s Black Sea Fleet has only one submarine, the Project 877 Alrosa, which is undergoing scheduled repairs, according to RIA Novosti.

The admiral also stated that the Black Sea Fleet’s combat ships should be capable of carrying out anti-piracy missions in the Gulf of Aden as the fleet’s operational zone included the Mediterranean.
