Alliant Techsystems (ATK) and BAE Systems have been awarded a contract by the US Navy for the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) of the joint and allied threat awareness system (JATAS).

The 48-month $109m EMD phase will focus on transitioning the design from development prototypes to production representative systems.

JTAS is a next-generation warning system featuring an open architecture design to enhance aircraft survivability against man-portable air defence systems, small-calibre weapons and rocket-propelled grenades.

The system will interface with the existing AN/ALE-47 countermeasures dispensing system to provide advanced missile warning capability to the aircrew against laser-based weapon systems and hostile fire indication (HFI).

Work will be performed in ATK’s facilities in Florida and California as well as at BAE’s facility in New Hampshire, US, and is expected to be completed in September 2015.

The JATAS industry team also includes DRS and Goodrich.
