Reutech Radar Systems has been awarded a contract by the South African Navy (SAN) to research and develop a replacement optical radar tracker (ORT) for the four Valour-class frigates.

The ZAR8.417m ($1.2m) contract follows a contract awarded in January, according to Defenceweb.com.

The details of the contract have not been disclosed, however, defence analyst Helmoed-Römer Heitman said the deal would partly be an upgrade and partly a replacement of the laser range-finders.

The tracker, designated as RTS 6400, is a 60km instrumented-range monopulse X-band combined radar and optronics tracking system that uses a wide-band, high stability Travelling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTA) and advanced Doppler signal processing.

The highly modular design of the tracker allows easy adaptation to all naval fire control applications and to support semi-active homing missiles.

Each of the four frigates is fitted with one ORT and one electro-optical tracker (EOT).
