Metro Machine Corporation has been awarded a contract in support of the US Navy multiship, multioption (MSMO) LSD mid-life extension for the amphibious landing ship, USS Ashland (LSD 48).

The $78.8m contract is a modification of a previously awarded contract to provide modernisation, upgrades, preservations and alteration services for the LSD.

The LSD MSMO is developed to provide extensive services to shipboard systems that include engineering control systems, power management platform, and chilled water distribution systems.

USS Ashland has been designed to conduct amphibious operations through transporting, launching and supporting assault landing craft, marines and combat cargo to designated areas throughout the world.

Work will be carried out at the company’s facility in Norfolk, Virginia, US, and is expected to be complete by 25 January 2012.
