The South African Navy (SAN) has placed an order with Denel Aerospace for the resupply of Umkhonto surface-to-air missiles (SAM) for its Valour Class frigates.

The 125kg Umkhonto missile has a range of 12km and carries a 23kg warhead. It was recently fired during joint multinational Exercise Good Hope IV with Germany.

The missile is proven as a surface-to-air and surface-to-surface missile in naval environments including littoral water and land warfare scenarios.

The land version of the missile is being considered for development for SA Army Air Defence Artillery and the Finnish Navy.
