The Russian Navy plans to commission ten Graney Class nuclear-powered attack submarines by 2020, a high-ranking navy official has said.

"We are expecting to receive about ten new Yasen [Graney] Class attack submarines in the next ten years," the source added.

The nuclear submarines are designed to launch a range of long-range cruise missiles with conventional or nuclear warheads, and to attack submarines, surface warships and land-based targets.

The submarine will be equipped with 24 cruise missiles and eight torpedo launchers, as well as mines and anti-ship missiles, according to RIA Novosti.

The first Graney submarine is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy by the end of 2011, while the second and third vessels are being built at the Sevmash shipyard in the northern Russian city of Severodvinsk.
