General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products has been awarded a contract to exercise an option to procure 22 M61A2 20mm lightweight Gatling gun systems.

The $7.8m contract is a modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed price contract by the US Navy in support of the F/A-18 E/F strike fighter programme.

The F/A-18 E/F is a Boeing-built Super Hornet with a twin-engine, 4.5-generation carrier-based multirole fighter aircraft equipped with an internal 20mm gun, air-to-air missiles and air-to-surface weapons.

Work will be carried out at the company’s facilities in Vermont and Maine, US, and is expected to be completed in April 2013.
