The US Navy has awarded a contract to Lockheed to continue providing sonar systems for its submarines to enable the fleet to maintain an acoustic advantage.

The $84m contract has options that, if exercised, will bring the total contract value to $2.1bn.

Under the contract, Lockheed will develop, produce, support and modernise all US submarine sonar systems including Virginia Class submarines under construction as well as upgrades for all in-services submarines.

Acoustic rapid commercial-off-the-shelf insertion (ARCI) provides software and hardware updates to the submarine fleet’s sonar systems.
