Russia has recalled its first Borei-class nuclear submarine, the Yuri Dolgoruky, from sea trials for further inspections.

Institute of Thermotechnics engineer Yuri Solomonov said the inspection work will last for half a year.

“The situation with the cruiser is difficult. If the problems are eliminated, then the 15th launch of the Bulava will be carried out on board the submarine. If not, then it will take place on board the Dmitry Donskoy submarine,” he added.

The Yuri Dolgoruky had been undergoing sea trials and was expected to go into service in the first half of 2011, however the recall could possibly delay its deployment.

The Borei-class submarine has been designed to carry the next generation of nuclear-capable strategic missiles, the Bulava intercontinental missiles, according to Reuters.
