The Russian naval infantry is to be equipped with bulletproof life vests, according to naval infantry commander Major General Alexander Kolpachenko.

The vest has been designed for naval infantry and seamen serving on combat ships, and provides full ballistic protection against light weapon threats in addition to being a floatation device.

Delivery of the life vests will begin in 2011, according to RIA Novosti.

The 12,000-strong naval infantry is part of the Russian Navy. It consists of three brigades, two independent regiments and two independent battalions.
