The use of a ‘direct drive motor system’ instead of the traditional antenna rotator gearbox helps reduce maintenance costs.

Hensoldt UK Maritime Surveillance sales head Adrian Pilbeam said: “Hensoldt UK are pleased to supply the South African Navy with further SharpEye radars to assist in the demanding operational tasks.

“This continues the longstanding relationship for the supply of radar sensors to OSI Maritime Systems for integration into their bridge systems.”

The SAN’s MMIPVs are being built by Damen Shipyards Cape Town as part of Project Biro.

The vessels will be deployed to safeguard the country’s coasts from threats, such as piracy and illegal fishing.

Last August, Hensoldt UK delivered a radar suite consisting of Kelvin Hughes Mk11 S and X Band systems for the Philippine Navy’s frigate BRP Jose Rizal.
