General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) has secured a contract modification valued at $987m for the procurement of long lead time materials and construction expenses associated with submarine production.
This adjustment is linked to an existing contract and is designated for the advancement of component development and Class Lead Yard Support (CLYS).
Additionally, the modification includes provisions for the enhancement of Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) supplier capabilities supporting the US navy’s Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines and the nuclear shipbuilding enterprise namely, Virginia-class submarines and Ford-class aircraft carriers.
As detailed in the US Department of Defense contract award, the contract in question integrates a funding modification from the UK totalling $16.035m (£12m).
This additional funding is earmarked for the ongoing collaborative efforts between the US Columbia-class and UK Dreadnought-class submarine programmes, specifically concerning their shared missile compartment programme.
The focus of the SIB development work under this contract is to support the US Navy’s strategy for serial production of both Columbia-class and Virginia-class submarines.

The purpose of the study was to identify effective strategies for accomplishing the submarine force recapitalisation.
The SIB projects included in this contract modification are aligned with directives from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), OSD CAPE, and the US Navy.
Work associated with this contract will be conducted across several locations, with 70% of tasks taking place in Groton, Connecticut, 15% in Newport News, Virginia, and 15% in Quonset Point, Rhode Island.
The contract is expected to be completed by December 2031.
General Dynamics Electric Boat president Mark Rayha said: “This contract modification funds important shipyard and supply chain work essential to achieving the necessary growth in output and supports our efforts to accelerate submarine delivery.
“The ongoing support for the shipyards and our supply base from the Navy, Congress and the administration is appreciated and necessary for us to meet the Navy’s current and future demand for submarines.”
In September 2023, GDEB received a $517.2m contract to supply spare parts for Virginia-class attack submarines.
In addition, in May same year, the company received a $15.75m contract for lead yard support, development studies, and design efforts for Virginia-class submarines.
