As agreed, Fincantieri and REPUBLIKORP will form a joint venture that will work towards strengthening Indonesia’s self-reliance in defence and supporting the country’s mandate for increased domestic capabilities.

In a statement on 17 June, Fincantieri stated that the new entity will facilitate the local construction of a variety of naval vessels suited to Indonesia’s operational requirements and geographical conditions.

The partnership encompasses platforms such as landing platform docks (LPDs), landing helicopter docks (LHDs), multi-role frigates, corvettes, offshore patrol vessels, fast attack craft, and submarines.

These vessels are set to serve multiple roles, including high-end deterrence and enforcement in Indonesia’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

Fincantieri CEO and managing director Pierroberto Folgiero said: “Building on our established cooperation with the Indonesian Navy, this MoU marks a further step in strengthening a long-term strategic partnership between Fincantieri and Indonesia.

“By leveraging our expertise in high-complex naval shipbuilding and system integration, we are committed to supporting the development of local industrial capabilities and contributing to a more resilient maritime ecosystem.”

Fincantieri and REPUBLIKORP also agreed for the structured transfer of technology and technical know-how from the former to the Indonesian side.

The cooperation framework includes engineering exchanges, staff training, and the development of competencies in design, system integration, and local manufacturing.

Part of the objective is to support the domestic workforce and support the emergence of local suppliers, with the longer-term aim of facilitating Indonesia’s integration into the global shipbuilding industry.

REPUBLIKORP Group chairman Norman Joesoef said: “Exploring this partnership reflects our commitment to advancing Indonesia’s defence industry independence while building a strong and balanced international collaboration.

“Together with Fincantieri, we see an opportunity to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime capabilities, develop national talent, and contribute to a more resilient regional defence ecosystem.”

In December last year, Fincantieri delivered the multipurpose combat ship KRIPRABU SILIWANGI-321 to the Indonesian Navy in a ceremony at its Muggiano shipyard in La Spezia.
