Notably, the number of 3D printing-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 217 in Q4 2023, versus 174 in the prior quarter.

The top five companies accounted for 57% of patenting activity

Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that RTX filed the most 3D printing patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 46 3D printing-related patents in the quarter, compared with 42 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Safran with 32 3D printing patent filings, Boeing (21 filings), and AECOM (13 filings) in Q4 2023.

Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 44% share of total patent filings

The largest share of 3D printing related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q4 2023 was in the US with 44%, followed by China (7%) and France (6%). The share represented by the US was 9% higher than the 36% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
