Cybersecurity solutions for navies

Digitalisation also increases cybersecurity risks, particularly where connectivity between IT and operational technology enables hackers to exploit weaknesses to access control systems.
Navies have had cybersecurity on their radar for much longer than commercial shipping has, but we can help navies to learn from the experiences of the commercial shipping world and adapt proven standards and practices for naval use.
DNV GL has launched its Recommended Practice DNVGL-RP-0496 ‘Cybersecurity resilience management for ships and mobile offshore units in operation’, helping to prepare for ISO 27001 certification by outlining a strategy for assessing defects in three categories – technology, processes and people.
Based on the Recommended Practice, DNV GL’s Cyber secure class notation established the foundation for addressing cybersecurity levels for the main vessel functions either in operation or during construction. It includes different qualifiers such as Basic for ships in operation, Advanced for newbuilds where cybersecurity is integrated into the vessel design, and Plus for extra systems that are not part of the standard scope.
The Royal Netherlands Navy was the first to most recently receive the Cyber secure class notation for a naval newbuild.
