As a leading international classification society, DNV GL provides technical assurance services and engineering support for navy projects throughout the vessel’s lifecycle. This includes a specification stage, construction phase, operational life and decommissioning process.

We serve navies, yards, designers and suppliers of materials and components around the world.
As a leading international classification society, DNV GL provides technical assurance services and engineering support for navy projects throughout the vessel’s lifecycle.
DNV GL offers project and risk management and vessel optimisation services, covering reliability, operability, maintainability and lifecycle costs.

DNV GL focuses on technical, safety and quality issues and offers project and risk management, as well as vessel optimisation services, covering reliability, operability, maintainability and lifecycle costs.

We help naval designers, naval shipyards and navies to future-proof their business to face geopolitical, technological and economic change and pressures.

DNV GL helps navies to implement new technologies such as alternative propulsion systems, composite materials for hull and superstructure, lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, ships with modular multirole missions, and unmanned autonomous vehicles.

Battery and hybrid solutions for navy vessels

DNV GL has developed a full range of tools and services to assist navies in developing newbuild and retrofit hybrid and battery solutions.

Working closely with navies on the implications of Li-ion batteries in naval applications has provided valuable insights and resulted in the adaptation of DNV GL’s Battery Rules and Battery Guidelines to naval requirements.

Our services to navies in this field include the Battery Ready class notation, type approval and classification, technical / economical analysis, risk analysis, and battery service life and optimisation analysis.

We also cover ship performance instrumentation, measurements and analysis, technology qualification and hardware-in-the-loop testing of battery management systems.

Naval platform reliability and availability solutions

DNV GL assists navies in investigating potential causes and long-term effects of observed structural deformations on naval vessels.

Navies and vessels are facing increasing pressure due to complex technology, automation, reduced personnel complements and skill shortages. Since 2017, DNV GL has been developing new solutions to address the growing challenge of naval platform reliability and availability.

In the future, navies will be required to focus not only on minimum safety requirements but also on solutions to meet minimum reliability criteria.

Cybersecurity solutions for navies

DNV GL offers secure electronic certificates, smart survey booking and remote surveys for selected inspections. Digital services can be accessed via DNV GL’s Veracity platform. Customers have direct access to our expert network via our Date portal and requests are handled within 24 hours.

Digitalisation also increases cybersecurity risks, particularly where connectivity between IT and operational technology enables hackers to exploit weaknesses to access control systems.

Navies have had cybersecurity on their radar for much longer than commercial shipping has, but we can help navies to learn from the experiences of the commercial shipping world and adapt proven standards and practices for naval use.

DNV GL has launched its Recommended Practice DNVGL-RP-0496 ‘Cybersecurity resilience management for ships and mobile offshore units in operation’helping to prepare for ISO 27001 certification by outlining a strategy for assessing defects in three categories – technology, processes and people.

Based on the Recommended Practice, DNV GL’s Cyber secure class notation established the foundation for addressing cybersecurity levels for the main vessel functions either in operation or during construction. It includes different qualifiers such as Basic for ships in operation, Advanced for newbuilds where cybersecurity is integrated into the vessel design, and Plus for extra systems that are not part of the standard scope.

The Royal Netherlands Navy was the first to most recently receive the Cyber secure class notation for a naval newbuild.
