Based in Owego, New York, Lockheed Martin Corporation has secured a $150m (Nkr1.6bn) contract to transform six MH-60R helicopters into specialised configurations tailored to the Norwegian government’s defence capabilities. 

The deal also includes navigation systems and support services.

The undefinitized modification encompasses non-recurring engineering efforts and adds/deletes functionalities, paving the way for a customised fleet that aligns with Norway’s specific defence requirements. Lockheed Martin undertakes the task of adapting these aircraft to meet the needs of an ally.

Moreover, the contract includes producing and delivering four Embedded Global Positioning System Inertial Navigation Systems spares. This addition not only enhances the aircraft’s navigation capabilities but also ensures the longevity and reliability of the systems.

In October 2023, Norway enhanced their maritime capabilities by acquiring six MH-60R Seahawk helicopters from Lockheed Martin. Awarded by the US Navy, the multi-mission aircraft, designed by Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, will fortify Norway’s coast guard for search and rescue and coastal patrols.

The decision to opt for the MH-60R Seahawk was influenced by its advanced mission systems, sensors, low-flight-hour costs, and cost-effective maintenance. This contract marked Norway’s second MH-60R award in under a month, following a similar agreement for eight aircraft destined for the Spanish Navy. 

The geographical distribution of the work, spanning Owego, New York; Stratford, Connecticut; and Troy, Alabama, shows the collaborative effort involved in this venture. Lockheed Martin aims to complete the project by February 2027.

Naval Air Systems Command, based in Patuxent River, Maryland, oversees the contracting activity.

The financial aspect of the contract involves Foreign Military Sales customer funds amounting to $49.5m, providing the necessary resources to execute this defence initiative.

This strategic shift positions Lockheed Martin as a player in advancing international defence capabilities through customisation.

According to GlobalData’s “The Global Military Rotorcraft Market 2023-2033” report, Lockheed Martin Corp is anticipated to account for the fourth-highest revenue share of $3.7bn over the forecast period. The company will produce the MH-60R for Greece, Norway, Sweden, and Spain.
