MBDA has secured a new contract to equip the Brazilian Navy’s new Tamandaré-class frigates with the Sea Ceptor air defence missile system.

The addition of this weapon system will enable the Brazilian frigates to bolster its self-defence capabilities and respond to missile attacks to protect itself, consorts and fixed infrastructure while at sea or in harbour.

According to MBDA, the supersonic missile system has a range of more than 25km. It can be retrofitted into various platforms and can be controlled using the vessel’s existing surveillance radar sensors.

Sea Ceptor’s soft vertical launch technology simplifies the installation process, while the vertical launch capability enables 360° coverage in all launch sectors.

The system is already in operational service with the British Royal Navy’s Type 23 frigates and had been selected for the new Type 26 frigates.
