BAE Systems has been awarded a contract to deliver naval guns for the Belgian-Dutch Mine Counter Measures Vessels (MCMV) programme.

The company will provide a total of 12 Bofors 40 Mk4 naval guns to shipbuilding company Kership.

The MCMV programme for 12 mine hunting vessels is being led by Belgium Naval & Robotics, a Naval Group and ECA Group consortium.

It will lead the production phase and shipbuilding company Kership will execute it. The Belgian and the Netherlands navies will each receive six vessels.

Installation of the BAE naval guns on the vessels will be performed by Kership.

BAE noted that the first ship is scheduled to be delivered to the Belgian Navy in 2024.

The Bofors 40 Mk4 naval gun is the latest compact, low-weight version of the successful Bofors 40mm gun.

It is designed to offer the vessels with superior protection against surface, air, and shore-based threats.

The flexible, multi-purpose system can also offer ‘high survivability and tactical proficiency’ at all levels of conflict.

BAE Systems Bofors managing director Lena Gillström said: “The Bofors 40 Mk4 is a highly automated naval gun which will provide the Belgian and Dutch navies with significant firepower and great range.

“This latest contract expands the number of European nations using the Bofors 40 Mk4, and reflects the growing interest we are seeing in the region.”

Other customers of BAE Systems’ 40mm guns include Japan, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Uruguay, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the UK.
