US Marine Corps (USMC) has awarded a delivery order to L3Harris Technologies to supply additional Falcon III AN/PRC-160 HF radios.

The $50m follow-on order has been made under the Navy Portable Radio Program five-year indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract awarded to L3Harris in 2017.

The procurement of HF radios and associated equipment will support the USMC’s High-Frequency Radio II modernisation programme.

L3Harris Technologies Communication Systems president Dana Mehnert said: “The AN/PRC-160 delivers the security and resilience the Marine Corps needs for its tactical radio modernisation programmes while providing unmatched capability for marines on the battlefield.

“These radios provide high-speed, long-range HF communications that meet the Marine Corps’ demanding programme of record requirements.”

The AN/PRC-160 will replace the USMC’s legacy HF radios provided by L3Harris. It enables forces to conduct beyond-line-of-sight communications in a satellite-denied environment.

L3Harris claims that the radio is the smallest, lightest and fastest wideband HF manpack available, providing ten times the throughput over legacy systems.

The software-defined architecture of the AN/PRC-160 HF radio allows encryption updates.

The system provides command and control capability in contested environments. The Falcon III radio also provides interoperability among US and coalition forces.

In October 2017, L3Harris was awarded a $765m contract to provide tactical radios to the navy and Marine Corps.

The five-year contract covers the delivery of AN/PRC-152A, AN/PRC-117G and AN/PRC-160 wideband HF/VHF radio.
