The US Navy has awarded a $14.5m contract to Northrop Grumman for extended drydocking selected restricted availability (EDSRA) of USS Enterprise (CVN 65), the navy’s warship.

The contract is a modification to a previously awarded contract for planned and growth supplemental work for the accomplishment of the fiscal year 2008 for the ship.

Under the contract, the company will restore the ship, including all subsystems that affect combat capability and safety, to establish performance standards.

EDSRA will help perform hull inspections, recoating and other maintenance-related evolutions below the waterline that cannot be accomplished while the ship is waterborne.

It also provides sufficient time to perform more extensive propulsion plant repairs and testing.

The work is expected to be complete by August 2009, with work being carried out in Newport News in Virginia.
