Russia is planning to sell up to 40 fourth-generation diesel-electric submarines to foreign customers by 2015, reports state-run arms exporter Rosoboronexport.

The 636 Kilo Class submarine is the Russian Navy’s fourth-generation diesel-electric submarine and is believed to be the quietest of its class in the world.

These submarines which are intended for anti-shipping and anti-submarine operations are being built for India, China and Iran.

Alongside the navy’s Project-677 Lada Class diesel submarine features a new anti-sonar coating for its hull, an extended cruising range, and advanced anti-ship and anti-submarine weaponry.

Both classes of submarines are equipped with Club-S integrated missile systems that include the 3M-54E1 anti-ship missile and the 3M-14E land-attack versions and it can be launched from standard torpedo tubes from a depth of 130 feet.

The key purchasers of Russia’s naval armaments are India, China, Algeria, Vietnam and Indonesia.
