The US Navy has awarded a $21.6m contract to Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics, for procurement and repair work on the Los Angeles-class submarine USS Hartford.

The submarine was damaged in a collision on 20 March 2009 and the repair work is not expected to be complete until January 2010.

Under the contract the company will manufacture a port retractable bow plate and the sail, both off the hull, and will return the vessel to the Navy in full service condition.

The total value of the contract is now $37.4m including the initial contract awarded on 21 May.
