The Canadian Navy is to receive sub-net relay (SNR) network-centric military communications equipment from Rockwell Collins, under a new $7m contract.

The SNR navy communications programme provides specific internet protocol shipboard communications networks for tactical data exchanges to enhanced situational awareness and collaborative planning between navy warships.

Under the contract, the company will provide sub-net relay controllers, high-speed modems and very high-speed modems.

The SNR programme features built-in text chat, comprehensive signal display, and a remote-control graphic user interface.

The SNR technology will mostly use line-of-sight radio assets in the VHF and UHF bands to render tactical commanders a locally controlled data networking system.

The company will deliver 83 SNR systems to the navy from the company’s facility in Ottawa.
