The US Navy has awarded a $65.2m contract to General Dynamics Electric Boat to perform repair work on the navy’s Los Angeles-class submarine USS Hartford.

The submarine was damaged in a collision with San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans in the Strait of Hormuz on 20 March 2009.

Under the contract, the company will perform repair work including installation of a hull patch, bridge access trunk, sail and port retractable bow plane.

In addition, Electric Boat will perform mandatory corrective maintenance actions required for the repair and restoration of the submarine.

The work, to be carried out in Connecticut and Rhode Island, is expected to be complete by September 2010.

The contract has been awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, DC.
