The US Navy has awarded a $26.2m contract to Sierra Nevada for devices to jam radio signals used to set off roadside bombs.

The contract has been awarded to procure long lead material for the dismounted joint counter radio-controlled improvised explosive device electronic warfare (JCREW) systems.

The JCREW systems jam signals from radio-controlled IEDs in order to prevent them from exploding.

Under the contract, the company will procure required material for 1,300 dismounted JCREW systems and will provide support services to the systems that are to be used by forces in each of the military services of the central command area of responsibility.

The work will be carried out in Sparks, Nevada and is expected to be complete by December 2010.

The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington Navy Yard, has awarded the contract.
