The 5,300t frigate is currently undergoing precommissioning sea trials, and is armed with a mix of foreign and indigenous weapon and sensor systems.
The missiles fitted on the warship include Russian Shtil surface-to-air missile systems, Klub anti-ship cruise missiles and the Israeli ‘Barak-I’ anti-missile defence system, which can intercept incoming Harpoon and Exocet missiles.
The indigenously built INS Shivalik is the lead ship of its class and is scheduled to enter the service of Indian Navy in November 2009.
Two stealth frigates, which make up the Rs8,101 crore Project-17, the INS Satpura and INS Sahyadri, will be delivered in between 2010 and 2011.
