The $10m maritime experimental laboratory is one of the few laboratories built in the world to test the hydrodynamic behaviour of structures submerged in flowing water including submarines, ship hulls and underwater vehicles.
The laboratory will be used by Australia’s Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) to experiment on the development of Australia’s future submarine, the air warfare destroyer, minehunter vessels, patrol boats, amphibious craft and other maritime platforms.
The facility will also be used by students from the University of Tasmania to address technology and performance issues that might arise in current and future ship design.
