The UK Royal Navy’s ocean survey vessel (OSV) HMS Scott has, for the first time, been deployed to the Antarctic to perform patrol and survey missions.

The OSV is fitted with a state-of-the-art multibeam sonar suite that will be used to patrol and survey the Antarctic and South Atlantic.

The vessel has been deployed to expand the understanding of the marine environment, support the global community of Antarctica and to maintain the sovereign presence in the region until 2010.

HMS Scott will provide the navy with clear and accurate bathymetric data by using CARIS survey processing system.

The ship features technology that can analyse all types of oceanographic variables from salinity to sound speed throughout the water.

The survey vessel recently completed a ten-month refit beginning in August 2008 as well as sea trials.
