The US Navy has awarded a contract to BAE Systems to continue the design and development of the long-range land attack projectile (LRLAP).

The LRLAP is an advanced 155mm munition being developed for the navy’s advanced gun system, which uses a GPS-aided inertial navigation system (INS) to ensure accurate target engagement.

The projectile features rocket-assisted, range extension glide, forward canard-actuated flight control, unitary warhead and has a maximum operational range of 83 nautical miles.

The LRLAP is being developed for the navy’s planned Zumwalt Class destroyers and provides land attack warfare in support of ground and expeditionary forces where precise, rapid-response and long-range fire support is needed.

The $11.8m modification contract has been awarded by the Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington.
