Alliant Techsystems will produce solid rocket propulsion systems for all three stages of the US Navy’s Trident II Fleet Ballistic Missile under a $100m contract awarded by Lockheed Martin.

The Trident II (D-5) was deployed in 1990 and is the only US submarine-launched strategic missile system in production.

The US Navy has successfully conducted 129 consecutive test launches of the Trident II D5 missile.

ATK has supplied solid rocket propulsion systems for many US Navy missile programmes, including Polaris, Poseidon and Trident I C4, as well as the Trident II D5.
