PT DI director Budi Santoso said the purchase of the three CN-235 maritime patrol aircraft, valued at $80m, is part of the navy’s plan to acquire six aircraft, according to Antara News.
“We are also preparing the aircraft so that in the future they could be developed further to increase their capabilities, namely fighting submarines,” he said.
“The CN-235 reconnaissance planes have been equipped with detection sensors and control devices enabling them to carry out sensing, reconnaissance and targeting missions,” Santoso said.
The planes were included in the TNI AL’s 2010 – 2014 strategic plan and were intended to replace the navy’s Nomads.
The CN-235 is a medium-range twin-turboprop aircraft primarily intended for military roles including maritime patrol, surveillance and troop transport.
The aircraft has an operational range of 2,250nm and a cruising speed of 240kt, carrying a maximum payload of 6,000kg.
