As part of a $1.6bn contract signed in July 2006, Russia is building the vessels at Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad. The first guided-missile frigate, INS Teg, was floated out on 27 November 2009.
INS Teg is expected to begin sea trials in 2010 and will be transferred to the Indian Navy by 2011-12.
The three missile frigates are designed to perform a wide range of maritime missions, primarily hunting down and destroying large surface ships and submarines.
All the frigates will be equipped with Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles, a 100mm gun, a Shtil air defence system, two Kashtan air defence gun / missile systems, two twin 533mm torpedo tubes and an anti-submarine warfare helicopter.
