BAE Systems and Cobham will join forces to work on the US Navy’s next-generation jammer programme, which is intended to replace the ALQ-99 tactical jammer currently installed on EA-6B Prowler and EA-18G Growler aircraft.
The programme is designed to develop modern ways to jam enemy radars using the EA-18G as the target platform.
The solution from the strategic alliance will offer increased reliability, availability and supportability, while reducing the total cost of ownership to the navy.
BAE Systems attack solutions director Steve Morais said that their alliance on the next-generation jammer is driven by a shared commitment to provide a flexible solution that fully meets the navy’s operational needs.
“We bring a disciplined systems engineering and risk-management approach, derived from our combined experience with electronic warfare and attack systems in use today on fifth-generation fighters,” he said.
Cobham sensor systems vice president Andy Humen said that, together with BAE Systems, Cobham had an approach that would magnify the navy’s mission capabilities while reducing risk and providing the lowest acquisition and life-cycle costs.
The BAE Systems-Cobham alliance will combine expertise in electronic warfare, electronic attack, suppression of enemy air defences and irregular warfare support to ground forces.
