The US Navy has commissioned the newest Arleigh Burke Class guided-missile destroyer, USS Dewey (DDG 105) at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach, California.

Dewey is the 55th Arleigh Burke Class destroyer. It will undertake a wide range of operations from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection.

The new destroyer will be capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously, and carries a large array of offensive and defensive weapons designed to support maritime warfare.

The 509ft-long, 59ft-wide Northrop Grumman-built USS Dewey has a displacement capacity of 9,200t. The ship can cruise at speeds in excess of 30kt.

The ship is named after Admiral George Dewey, hero of the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.
