Bangladesh is in the advanced stages of finalising a deal to purchase a hydrographic survey vessel from the UK Royal Navy.

The £5m survey ship will be used to enhance the number of surveys and exploration activities in the Bay of Bengal for its energy security.

The acquisition of the hydrographic survey vessel is part of the government’s plan to equip the Bangladeshi Navy with a “3D” force that can operate underwater, on the surface and in the air.

Bangladesh is currently carrying out a seismic survey in the Bay of Bengal under the UN Convention of the Law of the Seas.

The Bangladeshi Navy is also acquiring two large patrol boats with missiles made by China as well as two helicopters and two offshore patrol boats from the UK.
