The Malaysian Navy says it will acquire new ships and upgrade existing vessels in an effort to strengthen its security operations in the country’s waters.

Malaysian Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar said the plans included upgrading its patrol vessels, and procuring littoral combat ships (LCS), three multirole support ships (MRSS) and six more anti-submarine helicopters, according to nst.com.my.

The patrol vessels will be fitted with the latest technology and delivered to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Aziz said.

According to the navy chief, the LCS are relatively small surface vessels for operations in the littoral zones that could incorporate anti-submarine warfare and anti-aircraft warfare capabilities.

The Nnvy is planning to procure three MRSSs with a displacement of 18,000t and a landing helicopter dock, which will be used to help disaster relief and international peacekeeping operations.
