The US and South Korea will conduct a joint naval exercise in an effort to practise intercepting submarines, according to Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman.

Whitman said that the joint anti-submarine and other military exercises were scheduled to begin in the near future, according to the BBC.

South Korea recently announced that an international investigation team had concluded that the country’s Cheonan warship was sunk by a torpedo fired from a North Korean submarine.

“The US decision to join the joint military exercises is a result of the findings of this recent incident,” Whitman said.

According to the Pentagon official, there would be no changes to the US plan stipulating the transmission of military command to South Korea in 2012.
