Lockheed Martin is proposing its latest fifth-generation F-35 fighters as carrier-based combat aircraft for the Indian Navy.

Lockheed Martin vice-president Orville Prins said the Indian Navy had issued a request for information about the F-35 aircraft, which can take off from aircraft carriers, according to ptinews.

He also said the company had recently demonstrated the ‘B’and ‘C’ variants of F-35 aircraft to the Indian Navy.

The F-35B is a short take-off and vertical landing aircraft, and the F-35C is a carrier-based maritime aircraft.

The Indian Navy will receive an indigenous aircraft by 2015 and is looking to procure fighter aircraft for another larger-size carrier to be built in the near future.
