The Canadian Navy has begun procuring the joint support ships (JSS) as part of the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) worth around $2.6bn.

The JSS project is to acquire up to three ships to replace the Canadian Navy’s ageing fleet of Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment vessels and provide core replenishment, limited sealift capabilities and support to maritime forces.

The design of the first JSS is expected to be ready in around two years, followed by a construction contract awarded to a Canadian shipyard.

The joint support ships will enable the Canadian Navy to carry out a wide range of operations, including peace support missions, humanitarian aid, evacuation and rescue operation.
