The US Navy may choose facilities in eastern Idaho for its two nuclear projects, known as the naval nuclear propulsion programme.

The US Navy plans to rehabilitate the facilities that already exist in Idaho so that it can be used to handle used nuclear fuel from the navy’s fleet.

The estimated $1bn project, in its early stages, intends to recapitalise on facilities in the Arco Desert, according to KPVI News 6.

Three public hearings will be held in eastern Idaho to factor in stakeholders’ concerns of potential environmental hazards from the projects before starting construction.

Navy officials say the Snake River alliance, an Idaho nuclear watchdog, is also yet to object to the projects.
