The Spanish Navy has received its largest ever amphibious warship, the LHD Juan Carlos I, from Navantia.

The 230m-long LHD Juan Carlos I has a displacement capacity of 27,500t and a 32m-wide beam, and can carry a crew of 247 as well as 30 medium and heavy helicopters.

The warship is fitted with podded electrical propulsion and is designed to perform various amphibious missions, force deployment, humanitarian assistance and as an auxiliary aircraft carrier.

The ship’s large hospital and cargo capacity makes it particularly suitable for deployment in disaster missions.

Construction of the ship started in 2005 and sea trials were launched on 10 March 2008, according to Brahmand.
