The Greek Navy has commissioned the first 214 Class submarine, HS Papanikolis, at Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW), a ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems company.

The new 65m-long submarine, with a displacement capacity of 1,700t, can be operated by a crew of 27 and is equipped with an air-independent fuel cell propulsion system for longer underwater endurance.

The submarine with an optimised diving depth is characterised by considerably reduced acoustic, thermal and magnetic signatures, which makes it extremely difficult to detect.

HS Papanikolis is the 11th submarine with fuel cell propulsion in service within the German, Hellenic, Italian, Korean and Portuguese Navies.

The Greek Navy has also ordered additional submarines of the 214 Class.
