The Israel Defence Force (IDF) is likely to cancel plans to purchase two new large missile ships for the Israel Navy.

The Israeli Defence Ministry allocated $330m in 2007 for the purchase of the 2,500t 100m-long missile ships, but is yet to progress with the procurement.

IDF could scrap the entire deal and reallocate the money for a new submarine or missile defence systems, according to the Jerusalem Post.

According to IDF sources, officials argue that the navy should invest in smaller patrol ships, which can be used to protect Israel’s coastline as well as impose sea blockades whenever necessary.

IDF chief of general staff Lieutenant General Benny Gantz is expected to make a decision in the coming months.
